Body mass index , or BMI, is a new term to most people. However, it is the measurement of choice for many physicians and researchers studying obesity. BMI uses mathematical formulas that take into account both a person's height and weight. BMI equals a person's weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. ( BMI=kg/m 2). It is basically a way of gauging your weight. To determine your BMI divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. The normal acceptable range of this measurement is 20.1 to 25.0 for men and 18.7 to 23.8 for women. The only exceptions are athletes and body builders, whose extra muscle may tip their BMI over the normal range.
For most people, determining the circumference of your waist and your body mass index ( BMI) are reliable ways to estimate your body fat and the health risks associated with being overweight, over fat or obese. BMI is reliable for most people between 19 and 70 years of age except women who are pregnant or breast feeding, competitive athletes, body builders, and chronically ill patients. Generally, the higher BMI, the higher your health risk, and the risk increases even further if your waist size is greater than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women. There are other ways, besides BMI, to determine your body fat composition, and your doctor can tell you about them, but the method recommended here will help you decide if you are at risk. You can use the BMI CALCULATION chart to determine your BMI. Then, measure your waist size. Now, with your BMI and waist size determined, you can determine your health risk relative to normal weight. Overweight and obesity have been associated with increased risk of developing such conditions as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease.
It is generally accepted that men should have less than 18% total body fat and women 23% or less, However, experts suggest that an excess is not particularly hazardous to health until an individual accumulates 35% and 40% total body fat respectively. Such levels definitely constitute obesity and potentially, if not most probably, have a detrimental effect on one's health.
Being overweight , eating poorly, and being physically inactive all increase your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Other factors affecting your disease risk include your family and medical history, and lifestyle factors such as whether you smoke or drink too much alcohol. So stay fit and healthy because then only you can enjoy life better.
