Actually trytophan belongs to the family of amino acids. The brain uses this essential amino acid, a building block of many proteins, to fashion serotonin, a mood-enhancing neurotransmitter that controls your mood or say you. Serotonin is the most important chemical produced in the brain to counter stress. It has been found that pouring tryptophan in the brain by eating sugar- or starch-rich foods improves some people's moods. However, adding protein to the foods makes tryptophan ratios fall, leaving you vulnerable to anxiety.

There are other stress release proteins also under scientific research that can compete with trytophan. The leading contender in this race is milk-derived protein--alpha-lactalbumin--that is unusually rich in chemical similar to tryptophan. Moreover, this protein is low in amino acids that compete with tryptophan for absorption by the brain. For their tests, the researchers enriched a drink with either of this chemical and both showed results that put them in the topmost level as far as countering stress and fatigue is considered.
