Obesity among children

Throughout most of the developed as well as urban developing countries Obesity is spreading rapidly. Even though today we are more cautious about the nutritional content and quality of the food served to our children, yet more and more of them are having obesity related problems. So what are the factors that are making our children obese despite all our efforts? It seems that obesity is the worst trend that’s hitting many of our children even though, the children do not like being obese.

To figure out the root causes we need ot look no further than the lifestyle that these children are pursuing. Today children prefer internet surfing, chatting and playing computer and console games along with watching TV. All this leads them to spend on an average six to hours of their day in sedentary activities which leads to non exhaustion of the calories they consume, which ultimately contributes to the fat content of their bodies. So it becomes necessary to make them attached to some form or the other of physical activities which will help them to burn the calories consumed regularly.

But if that was all we would have less than half children suffering from this condition, so what is the rest of the story. Well it starts with the various fatandsugarfoods being popular with the children, these so-called junkfood (called so due to the low nutrient value and higher calorific value of these foods and snacks) enchant the taste-buds and make the children prefer them over home cooked or more healthier options. Also due to the huge profit made by firms from sales to children these companies campaign to the children to consume more of their products. All these together make it very hard for the parent s to keep the children away form such food and snacks.

And finally all these accumulation of unhealthyfatsandsugars lead to many diseases that rarely occur among the children. The increasing cases of heart attacks among youths and diabetes and high sugar levels among children has made the medical community take up the cudgels against children obesity.

To fight obesity we must endeavor to change the wrong s in the lifestyle of our children. This means teaching them the importance of physical sports and limiting the fore-mentioned sedentary activities to acceptable hours. Then we must discourage them from having fast food and snacks by setting our own examples and trying to eat out lesser than before. With efforts on all front obesity among children is sure to crumble but it will require a great amount of effort on our part.
