Physical Health Education - Starting it Young !!


Physical Health Education for Young Children

Educating the young from the very beginning has been a lasting challenge for the educators for many centuries. But education shouldn’t be confined to academics only rather it should have equal importance for physical education . These words are extremely worn out but they still hold great value since the pressure by parents on students to focus on academics over runs the importance of knowledge relating to health issues. This results in individuals who develop unhealthy habits which later trouble them when they become adults.

But physical education is unfortunately taken lightly. But many institutions have developed excellent methods which rely on progressive educational schedule. These schedules rely on a balanced approach towards development of physical health knowledge and skills. And as the theoretical education continues, the students are given help in developing physical skills which suit them, to its fullest potentials.

But every school and related educational institutions have to address a variety of factors which are unique to them. And even after making allowances and arrangements for these the programs have to be flexible to suit the individual needs of student having different knowledge, interest and learning bases. Also factors like space, funds, skilled staff and voluntary staff etc. availability has to be taken into account while both micro and macro planning of the program. Also planning and management of various activities by dividing them into various school teams and groups allow more flexibility and efficiency.

But many of us still sadly attach physical education with sports only but it’s important to change this view since it physical education is meant to impart best practices in various areas of learning in a student’s mind and body. These habits later go on to improve their lifestyle and help keep them healthy and at the top physical condition which helps them perform well in life. An excellent example would be the dietary lessons and teachings imparted to the students, to help them understand the basics of healthy eating habits. Then students may be asked to write reports on their diet or given quizzes to gauge their knowledge. Also various media on this topic can be shown to them and various interactive projects like gauging the nutritional value of lunches or meals eaten at home.

Lastly one of most important factor is managing the resources available in the best possible way and teaching the same to the student so that they feel responsible towards the efforts and understand the value of such health education project . Managing and scheduling time periods allowed to various groups in the gym and such scarce facilities with other colleagues and fellow students goes a long way to success.
